Dealing with low power communications
With the advent of the newly developed low-power communication technologies, errors and delays in the transmissions are unavoidable. If automatic decision making is based on the information to be communicated, errors and delays in the transmissions can have potentially large impacts and should be rigorously analyzed. At the same time, important research questions arise when designing smart building systems based on wireless communications: How often is it necessary to communicate data to guarantee a certain performance? What is the optimal trade-off between communication energy consumption, latency, packet dropout rate and performance? Stochastic and multi-objective optimization techniques are necessary to answer these questions, which will provide guidelines for the choice of the most suitable communication technology.
